GrogTag is in the business of making your beer look good. Brulosophy.com is all about making your beer taste good - which is something new to us. We have been following the crew at Brulosophy for awhile, and have enjoyed seeing them tackle every aspect of the homebrewing process with one goal in mind: to see if all the work we do to make good beer actually matters in the end.
How do they do it? Well, Marshall and his team brew two batches of beer with at least one variable different between them (a different hop or mash temp, for example), and then hit local homebrew clubs, beer bars, and wherever else people drink beer in order to get the average person's take on the two beers.
To do this, the Brulosophy folks use a Triangle Test: they will present the target drinker with three beers - two are the same and one is different. The drinker is then tasked with attempting to determine the odd-beer-out. It's a great way to eliminate the 50% chance that you will pick the right beer, and makes it that much harder on your palate to find a change.
We wanted to partner with Brulosophy.com in making a free Tasting Mat just for them, and one that can help our fellow homebrewers conduct their own triangle tests at home. Maybe you want to use a new dry hop, or a new yeast. Maybe you want to increase your mash temp, or play around with different base malts. The triangle test is a great way to conduct these tastings, and we hope the Brulosophy/GrogTag Tasting Mat will help you on your way to making better beer!
